Our main, and most important, mission is to fight sexual abuse of children, with focus on digital media. Nesna University College has pledged it selves to give our Informatics and Teacher education students knowledge about the field of sexual abuse of children, so as to rise their awareness and enable them to pass this knowledge and awareness along both as students, professionals and parents, to the rest of our society.
We do this work in cooperation with Save the Children Norway, and Nesna University College has the only computer science program in the world that has sexual abuse of children as the main topic on its curriculum.
The computer science students provide both Save the Children Norway and the National Criminal Investigation Service with reports on various topics such as secure chat, camera phones and possible abuse, Freenet as a tool for sexual abuse, etc. This exceptional cooperation between higher education and public and private organizations in this field makes the project not only unique, but might also be a major factor in both the willingness of students to learn social informatics and their development of skills in the various topics of social informatics.
While the main goal is, and will always be, to fight sexual abuse of children, Nesna University College as an educational institution, also has an obligation to look into how this project might be used as a tool for learning within the field of Social Informatics, Pedagogical Threats of Digital Media and Teacher Education.
